When Brian Froud and Jim Henson were working on the film The Dark Crystal in the early 1980s, they began talking about doing a movie involving goblins. Their original ideas were quite different from what Labyrinth eventually became. During this early developmental phase, Brian Froud produced a pop-up book called Goblins. Published in 1983, at least one goblin moved on to "star" in Labyrinth.
